On August 12, 2023, Canada’s Walk of Fame celebrated 2019 Inductee Dr. James Naismith, inventor of basketball, with a special Hometown Stars event at Gemmill Park in Almonte, Ontario, his hometown and the birthplace of basketball. The free public celebration, held during Mississippi Mills’ Bicentennial and the 28th annual Naismith 3×3 Basketball Tournament, featured a commemorative plaque unveiling, guest speakers, and musical performances.

- Jim Naismith, grandson of Dr. James Naismith
- Cheryl Naismith Ryder and Annie Naismith Evans, great-granddaughters
- Mayor Christa Lowry, Mississippi Mills
- MPP John Jordan
- Representatives from Scotiabank and Cineplex
- Members of the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees Men’s Basketball Team
- Canadian athlete and artist Mallory Tolcher
Performances Included:
- Kellylee Evans, Ottawa-based Juno Award-winning jazz artist
The Naismith family selected the R. Tait McKenzie Memorial Museum & Dr. James Naismith Collection as the beneficiary of a $10,000 donation to preserve Dr. Naismith’s legacy and contributions to sport worldwide.
