5 Questions for Tom
By Alan Cross
A.C: If I’m ever passing through Lynn Lake, Manitoba, and feel the need
to go fishing, any recommendations for where I might get me some
nice Northern Pike?
T.C: Up there? Pretty much cast a crank bait in any direction and you’ve
got a good chance of nailing a jack, a big one.
A.C: Could you fly us in on your float plane?
T.C: Yes I could if I still owned it but I sold it a couple of
years back.
A.C: What are the perks of being a member of the Order of
Canada?
T.C: There are no perks really, there shouldn’t be, it is a wonderful
honour and something that celebrates being a Canadian citizen.
A.C: What is it about the songs “Big League” and “Life is a Highway”
that seem to be so enduring and endearing?
T.C: They are both cultural songs in a sense, “Big League”
resonates with Canadians especially in small towns and communities
where hockey is the one of the ties that bind us together…we rally
around it…“Life is a Highway” is culturally broader, U.S. and Canada,
Australia etc…the road as a metaphor is universal and you can dance to it.
A.C: Do Canadians suffer from “tall poppy syndrome?”
T.C: Do we really eat our own as opposed to celebrating our
stars? (Outside of hockey and curling, of course...)Yea. Sometimes,
I think it’s something we inherited from the Brits, being an ex colony and all.
