What makes Canadians so funny?
By cwof | comments(10)

Canada has pumped out a lot of funny people (Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, John Candy, The Kids in the Hall and Howie Mandel to name only a few) over the years. But what makes Canadians so funny? Is there such a thing as Canadian humour? Do we laugh at different things than our American neighbours? Is our comedy influenced more by American culture or British humour? Who's your favourite Canadian comic? Share your thoughts on Canadian comedy and you could win free movie passes.

Our jury will select the 5 best responses who will each win 2 cineplex movie passes.

Canadians are funny because

Canadians are funny because we are open to humour.

Look around you and you can see that anything can be turned into a joke and someone will listen. We grow up with humour all around us and that allows us to find ways to make jokes, let alone better jokes than the rest of the world.

Where else can you get away with a joke like "yo mama is so fat, when God said let there be light she flipped the switch"? Using American flavour, some Americans might be offended at this joke if said during a stand-up routine: "yo mama is so fat she tripped over Wal-Mart, stumbled over K-Mart, and landed on Target".

Noone can compete with Canada! Watch Just for Laughs and you will see the diversity of our humour.

Funny Peeps...

Canadian humour is unique in that we are constantly poking fun at ourselves. The funniest peeps around have always been able to take a good joke as well as they tell one. Canadians have always welcomed jokes directed at them, and often carry it on. Canadians dont take themselves seriously, even maybe when we should, but especially not when it comes to humour.

" Banana's are very much like traffic lights, except for in the case of Banana's, Yellow means GO, and Green Means STOP, and Red means where the **** did you get that Banana?!" - Mitch Hedberg......Wasn't Canadian, but was stupid funny!

Dogs are forever in the pushup position.

Cheers

howie r0xXx

he is my fav cuz my friend was on his first episode i luv him!!! howie you rule.

My favourite comedian is.........

the 4 people from Air Farce (R.I.P. Mike from Canmore).... the others who came in the more recent seasons are not included (pending justification).

They really took comedy and satire and put them together. The political jokes, media-based jokes and even the taxi-guy jokes ("No VISA, only cash or I kill you!") gave us 16 amazing seasons of something funny to watch every Friday night during TV season.

Even each Year of the Farce special shown on New Year's Eve was priceless from start to finish. And the fans certainly knew how to vote for the right person to get the Chicken Cannon treatment!!!

Why Canadians are so funny!

To start off I want to thank the previous poster for writing this: "The model comic who exemplifies all these traits of Canadian humour has got to be the GREAT Russell Peters. Peters has toured all around the globe - packing venues with people of all types of different backgrounds and ethnicities - and at the end of every one of his shows, he somehow manages to make everybody laugh... AT THEMSELVES!!!!!" Canada is multi-cultural. We've come a long way from the Natives land being taken away and colonized by the British and the French. 142 years into our life as the nation of Canada, we have a diverse set of cultures. Humour can be based on culture, race, or just pointing out the cold hard truth. The fact that Russell Peters can perfect crude, racist and just "duhhh, newfie" type humour into his skits and make people laugh at themselves or laugh with him shows that we have enough of an open-mind to appreciate a joke. Some of these jokes would never fly in England or certain "hick" areas of the United States because they either bash something traditional or are too "outside the box" for them to handle. Also with comedians like Carrey and Myers, some of the stuff they do (actions or lines they say) can be obnoxiously and unexpectedly stupid (even if you expect something stupid to be said or done in a movie they star in) that you have no choice but to laugh at it. Canadians in some sense are perceived as "stupid" by others (such as the uptight, self-centered and inflated general American public, remember there are good apples too so I'm not bashing all Americans) and these type of jokes or mockery play right into that. Come on, anyone who has watched Colin Mochrie will know that absolute on-skit stupidity can be laughable. But yaaa, my favourite comic is Russell Peters. Hands down. "Fifty cent a lotta money" - can't beat an original Pacific Mall quote like that EVER!

Please laugh AT me... not WITH me.

Why are Canadians so funny? Because here in the Great White North, we know how to laugh at ourselves and never take ourselves too seriously. We look at the stereotypes cast upon us by our neighbours to the south, and instead of getting defensive, we join in on the fun! And while we're at it, we'll even take some jabs back at them! Why not?

The model comic who exemplifies all these traits of Canadian humour has got to be the GREAT Russell Peters. Peters has toured all around the globe - packing venues with people of all types of different backgrounds and ethnicities - and at the end of every one of his shows, he somehow manages to make everybody laugh... AT THEMSELVES!!!!!

The Canadian way of humour is absoultely infectious once you've mastered it, and Russell Peters has.

Favourite Canadian Comic

I would say that my favourite Canaidian comic would be Eugene Levy.....
he has a whitt and a style about him that makes him unparelle to anyone else.
Whether he is appearing on SCTV back in the day or as the clueless father in American pie, which is a little less back in the day... He takes a hold of the characters and brings them to life... but without that charm and that whitt... we wouldn't be laughing our pants off... so its pretty easy to say that the numereous laughs he has provided me, certainly qualifies him, in my eyes to be the best!

Good Canadian Joke

A Canadian is walking down the street with a case of beer under his arm.

His friend Randy stops him and asks, "Hey Dave! Whatcha got that case of beer for?"

"Well, I got it for my wife, you see?" answers Dave.

"Wow," exclaims Randy, "Great trade."

why canadians are so funny

1) our currency is called "the loonie"
2) our political leaders are also in charge of their own security
3) our attitudes towards our neighbor can be summed up as "we're like the loft of a really good party" - Robin Williams

Proud to be Canadian

Well I'll tell ya what eh.

Well I'll tell ya what eh. Most people around the world dont really know whats funny eh. We dont ever have to worry about being laughed at because we laugh at ourselves, dont ya know. We dont have to take life as serious eh. I used to love that REd Green show eh. That guy used to put duct tape on everything! Was great eh! I bet if them americans had that Corner gas show on down there, they would be laughing more dont ya know. Its a funny show cause its all aboot Canadians eh. They need to just unwind, grab a case of blue and watch strange brew, those HOSERS!
